I was working closely with a friend at Al-Arabiya at this time who was born in Beirut and whilst I'd visited Lebanon at various times in the preceding 20+ years, he shared many new insights to the multicultural, multi ethnic composition of the country. As an educationalist, I was always impressed by one of the few philanthropic US efforts in the midst of their own Civil War to establish the American University in Beirut. One has to recognise that it had a Christian influence from missionary work in the region and perversely, funding was only possible due to the rise of the British Empire and £ sterling value, which the founders used to combat the $US dive in the mid s. The founding international statement was - "This college is for all conditions and classes of men without regard to color, nationality, race, or religion. A man, white, black, or yellow, Christian, Jew, Mohammedan, or heathen, may enter and enjoy all the advantages of this institution for three, four, or eight years; and go out believing in one God, in many gods, or in no God. But it will be impossible for anyone to continue with us long without knowing what we believe to be the truth and our reasons for that belief.” It took almost another half century before women became undergraduates, although they now represent a substantial percentage of each graduation ceremony. Sadly no female president yet appointed!
